Prior to becoming a mum I was a secretary/administrator with 15 years admin background in the banking, computer software, airline catering, magazine publishing, event management, local government and engineering industries. For the last two years I had quite extensive experience with desktop publishing and graphics.
Now I cannot get a job.
When I apply for positions similar to what I had prior to being a mum I get told that people more experienced are getting those positions and don't even get an interview. Slightly less challenging ones are taken again by more experienced people. So I went lower and started applying for reception and customer service positions. When I got turned down recently for one of these I asked for feedback and was told that I was overqualified and they thought I'd get bored! Where exactly do I fit in - there's no middle ground!
Without having met me and figured out where I come from THEY decided that I would get bored. I'm a little insulted - my cv is also with two supermarkets, the Warehouse, the local gas station and the local cheese factory. Being bored to me means that I can get my work done without any problems and then help out elsewhere - isn't that an advantage rather than a disadvantage. Seriously I'd be happy to be stacking shelves right now - being bored isn't an issue - LIVING without financial worry is an issue!
